this is a cool little tool. i have used it for a light sanding job and to grind the dogs toenails. worked great for both. not too loud so doesnt scare the dogs. and strong enough to get the thick nails. also used to grind a plexi-glass lid for a terrarium. i have other plans for this handy tool and would reccomend that you try it out. everyone could find a few projects that this would be great for!

This tool works the way I thought that the several cheaper versions should. I was trying to drill holes in stones for jewelry, and the Dremel is my dream-come-true tool. I am more then pleased with my new Dremel 8000. I have had it for several weeks and it is still working off the 1st charge. I use it to Dremel my 5 dogs nails. Out of all of my tools this one is used practically everyday. The old Dremel battery-powered units cannot hold a candle to this Li-Ion unit, it actually has some power and it lasts - I would not consider being without one. I have used to clean off the jagged edge of an aluminum propeller without a recharge and have actually used it to cut off the handcuffs on a detainee without any problems (ensure you wrap the wrist with a wet towel, the metal of course gets hot). I recommend you obtain a second battery, I use it often and when it's depleted it's now, not gradually like the old Ni-Cad powered units. With the Li-Ion it charges up in less than 15 minutes. I have one and purchased one for my father - he loves it.

This is truly a great tool when used for what it is good for. I like this better than the corded because there isn't a cord that gets in the way or causes you to not be very accurate. The case is disappointing but not a deal breaker. It kind of looks like it was made as 1 size fits all for multiple Dremel products but everything does fit securely. Then battery seems to last a long time, its light weight, and it has plenty of power just like the corded version.

"Works pretty good. Still finding new uses" 2010-09-12

So we have had this for 2 years. Occasional heavy use, but only once a month or so. Used it for home improvement, believe it or not, in the absence of anything else but a screwdriver.

It did alright cutting thick Plexiglas, although it did not provide quite the even cut I had hoped for. but then, it wasn't meant for that, so I cut it some slack.

It did pretty good drilling holes so that I could put up towel bars, a medicine cabinet, even the shower bar. It had a very difficult time when we were removing an old towel bar, where the screw had been stripped and had to be drilled out. None of the attachments seem to do very well with metal. But I got it done.

It was great when we broke the tiny plastic control knob for a remote control helicopter, and we had to drill a hole to put a piece of paperclip in to reinforce the glue.

Most recently, I have discovered it does very well at removing heel callous, with the sander bit.

Downsides: it can overheat. It has a hard time with anything metal. Of late, it likes to be seated "just right" in the charger, or it wont charge.

Anyhow.. Nice little tool.

I just got one of these for Christmas. Today is January 7, 2010 and my Stylus is back in the box waiting to be returned after attempting to use it ONCE. The button to change bits won't work most of the time, and when I can manage to get it to open and put in a bit, the darn thing won't stay turned on for more than a minute. I charged it for 24 hours and it didn't help. At high speeds it won't work at all. I'm going for something different and with a cord . . .

I bought one of these because I wanted a cordless rechargeable dremel. I already had a Multi-pro tool 395, which I love and use often, but sometimes was too powerful for the task I was doing, or plugging it in was inconvenient. As a result, I bought a super-cheap rechargeable Dremel that was purposely low-power for delicate jobs like filing the dog's nails. That was great, but I did get tired of the battery running low when I wanted to keep working. This Dremel stylus is the perfect middle ground! It has more power than the cheapy rechargeable, and it's more convenient than the multipro. I like the recharging stand: it has a nice sleek look on my desktop and has storage for the bits I use most often. The only thing that I think could be improved:

1. The power button and the button you hold to change bits are too close together and too much alike. A few times I've meant to release the bit to change it, and accidently turned the power on. Lucky I didn't hurt myself, because I was grasping the drill bit to remove it, when I turned the power on! They should at least be a different color or placed in different locations.

2. The dial to adjust the power seems to increase on it's own sometimes. Maybe the vibration when working, or maybe I unknowingly turn the dial up when I'm changing attachments .. but I'm often surprised by the speed when I turn the unit back on to work after changing an attachment/bit/whatever you call it.

For the 2 reasons above, I subtracted one star, but even so .. I would buy this again. I reach for this tool more often than any other. It always seems to be just the right thing for the job. And it's never run out of juice when I needed to work on something.

I got this at a deep discount as a part of a set with the 1120 screwdriver. The price was great.

The tool works very well for fine work. Jewelry, PC boards, small delicate wood work, polishing and cleanup. It is not a replacement for the larger heaver Dremel tools as general purpose device.

The good and bad news is that it comes with a lot of tools many of which are not terribly useful--I don't know many folks who do jewelry or metal work and wood work both, so over 1/2 the tools are wasted. Also tools storage for the supplied tools is grossly inadequate to the point of being a pain.

I am a modder, and I used to use this a lot on many different mods that I work on (game consoles, routers, laptops etc.). The portability is really nice, though the power isn't as strong as some other rotary tools like the black & decker rtx-b in particular. With fully charged batteries, it can cut through alot of materials, but dont expect to be able to drill through any metal. The only thing that could make it better is if they included an upconverter in the rotary tool. That way, instead of the tool slowing down when the batteries start dying, it will continue to operate at a good speed until the batteries are completely drained. I highly suggested it if you NEED something cordless or if your doing quick or lightweight work (trimming pet nails, etching some plexiglass, etc.) However, if your going to be working on a project for some time or if your cutting plexi, I would have to suggest the black and decker rtx-b or rtx-6 rotary tools (the other dremel rotary tools are highly overpriced in my opinion, and the black and decker ones have more amperage = torque = power = ability to cut through harder substances.)

NOTE: Get some rechargeable batteries, you'll thank yourself later.

The best price I've found for a battery-operated Dremel is the Golf Cleaning Tool Kit. Similar tools, albeit with sanding drum attachments, are sold as "pet grooming tools" and cost significantly more. I use this tool regularly for grinding toenails on my show dogs and find they vastly prefer this battery-operated tool to a corded, electric one. This tool is capable of many traditional high speed/low torque rotary tool tasks.

If you're looking for battery powered convenience (4-AA batteries), I highly recommend this two-speed tool. Battery life is reasonable and though the tool is not too cumbersome in the hand for most jobs, if you have a job that requires you to hold it like a pencil it can become a bit fatiguing (it's pretty heavy at the end opposite your work.) The button-lock means you don't have to fool around with small wrenches to tighten or loosen the collett when changing attachments. If you find instances where the convenience of battery operability is of paramount importance, this is a very plausible tool to consider.

Its a rare human who actually enjoys clipping a dogs nails; and rarer still, the dog who enjoys it. Enter Dremels cordless groomer, a quiet, battery-powered rotary tool that gently grinds down your pets nails without cutting. We happen to know a particular hound named Sophie whos endured more than her share of cracked nails and bleeding nail beds, the result of the standard guillotine-type nail trimmers. Though she was a bit wary of the Dremel, she sniffed at it and decided it was harmless. Then we set it on the floor and turned it on. Sophie seemed concerned for a minute, but then lost interest. We let her get used to the sound of the Dremel for a few minutes, then got down to business. We expected her to cringe and pull away when we took paw in hand, for what usually follows is not pleasant for her. She submitted reluctantly at first to the Dremel, probably expecting the worst, but once we distracted her with a piece of rawhide, she forgot about the nail hubbub and let us carry on. The whole thing was quick and painless, which made a change for Sophie, and was actually kind of soothing for the humans, which definitely made a change for us. We followed the advice in the manual and alternated between two paws at a time, not keeping the abrasive on any nail for more than a couple of seconds, and we made sure each nail was cool before grinding it a second time. If we had a criticism, it would be to wish only that Dremel would include the -inch drum for larger dogs like Sophie as well as the smaller one. Other than that, its a tail-wagger.

I have Westies and have for years been using the old type nail clipper. WELL NO MORE. Westies are not that fond of having their nails clipped in the first place but this works great. No more sharp edges, no more cutting in the quick and no more worring if the blades on the clipper are sharp enough. This is easy to use since there is no cord and easy to charge so you can grab and go. I recommend to anyone who has pets, this is the perfect solution, the only question I have is to myself, why did I wait so long to get one:)

Both my large dog and I hated clipping his nails. I picked this

up few years ago after reading some reviews and have never looked back.

Not having to worry about cutting off too much nail makes it much

less of a chore. It has plenty of power for the job, the batteries last

through quite a few clippings and I don't have to worry about working around a cord.

I can't imagine going back to a clipper.

I bought this for a large model boat project. It had some hard use and the large cutting discs are very useful. Battery life is excellent. The speed controller switch however has malfunctioned and comes on and off on it's own which is neither desirable nor safe. The tool currently in the chuck has also jammed shut and cannot be undone! I have just ordered another one at great expense as could not find Amazon return policy.

This is not a review of the product - just answering the question about model numbers.

I just spoke to Dremel. All the 8000-0X models contain the same tool, the same battery and the same charger. The difference is in the accessories and the carrying case:

8000-01 (if you can find one) came with 60 accessories.

8000-02 came with 40 accessories

8000-03 is identical to 8000-02, but the carrying case is smaller, allowing them to fit more product on the store shelves.

8000-05 is "an industrial product available only through industrial channels." When I said that it is available on Amazon.com, the rep found that odd, said that she (being a retail rep) didnt know what accessories were inluded, but said that the tool is the same but the kit includes tools more appropriate to an industrial user.

Sooooo... there you have it!

I've used mine for about a year now. Mine never said anything about being "Industrial" and I paid about $33 for mine but this 10.8 ION battery version has plenty power and endurance. I would suggest strongly in getting cut offs and grinders as it comes with the usual sanding and buffing disc and you will find cutting and grinding jobs will come up often around the house. A great tool for making things fit....

In an attempt to determine what, if any, difference there was between the industrial and standard versions of this product are I contacted Dremel directly. I was told that there is no "Industrial" version of the 10.8 Volt Rotary Tool and that they were going to investigate the situation. I have no information on the status of said investigation. If you are interested in this tool I would suggest following this link.
