We followed the advice in the manual and alternated between two paws at a time, not keeping the abrasive on any nail for more than a couple of seconds, and we made sure each nail was cool before grinding it a second time. If we had a criticism, it would be to wish only that Dremel would include the -inch drum for larger dogs like Sophie as well as the smaller one. Other than that, its a tail-wagger.

I have Westies and have for years been using the old type nail clipper. WELL NO MORE. Westies are not that fond of having their nails clipped in the first place but this works great. No more sharp edges, no more cutting in the quick and no more worring if the blades on the clipper are sharp enough. This is easy to use since there is no cord and easy to charge so you can grab and go. I recommend to anyone who has pets, this is the perfect solution, the only question I have is to myself, why did I wait so long to get one:)

I highly recommend this tool!! I have an Akita and my dog is a big baby when it comes to cutting her nails. I bought this tool on the advice of a friend, who has 6 dogs. Both my large dog and I hated clipping his nails. I picked this

less of a chore. It has plenty of power for the job, the batteries last

I have an old Dremel MiniMite that I use on my cats claws. The only difference I can see from the pet version is the MiniMite has a rechargeable battery and a few different bits. Pet version rpm's is a little higher. The MiniMite does what I need it to do. My cat doesn't seem to mind as long as I use the slow speed. I'm not sure if it also makes a difference that I changed the sanding tube to a finer grit than the one it originally came with. I think the vibration is the issue not the noise. I decided this because I have an extremely loud vacuum cleaner and my cat will continue to nap when I am vacuuming just a few feet from her. She doesn't even flinch. I think it's what she feels, not what she hears, that disturbs her.



I use the Soft Paw nail caps on her. When they fall off, the nail underneath is long and sharp. I still have to trim the tips of the nails with the nippers then use the Dremel to file the nail down to where I need it and sand away the old glue. I have a video on YouTube that I took of my cat when I was replacing a cap. MissBiscuit823, "Kitty gets her manicure". You can see how she jerks away when I forget and put it on the high speed. She is so good when I do her nails but I can tell you that didn't happen overnight. It takes time and patience to get your pet to accept the whole nail grooming process. You can expect your pet to be resistant in the beginning.



There are lots of videos on YouTube where people and professionals give tips on how to do your pets nails. There's some very good tips but also a lot of videos where you can clearly see what the pet owner is doing wrong! I've seen people trying to use Pedipaws which is like a Dremel and they are doing it totally wrong and frightening their pet. In the end they decide the product is to blame when it's obviously not the tool that's the problem.



Also, I know several manicurists that use the Dremel to sand away callouses from the feet when doing pedicures. Don't know how they sanitize it but there's another use for the Dremel you may not have thought of.

I had the Peticure, but it died after a year. I read some other negative reviews of the peticure when I went to purchase another one so I didn't want to buy it again. Which brought me to the Dremel. It is great. My dogs nails have not looked so good in a long time. The Dremel is not surrounded by a protective cover like the peticure, so you have to be super careful when filing your dogs nails. I have a system where I grab the digit and squeeze the protruding nail so minimize the vibration and of accidentally filing another nail or part of the paw that shouldn't be filed. It takes some practice, but I have it down pat now. I installed batteries when I first got it (4 AA's) and they have lasted for about 2 months with a filing maybe once or twice a month. (I only file a little at a time because my dogs nails got to be so long and I don't want to file too low to the quick, so I file a little at a time to allow the quick to recede before filing again). And then I bought rechargeable batteries anyway, to not throw away so many batteries.

I really recommend this product.

I've got 2 pitbulls, I used this on them yesterday without any problems. They were a bit apprehensive of the sound at first but once they got accustomed to it they didn't have any fear. I think that all of the people who gave this product 1 or 2 stars must have not read the instructions beforehand. I actually read them afterwards since I already knew what I was doing and a lot of the problems people had could most likely have been solved with the manual. One negative thing I will say is that the wrench tool is not included...I don't know what it would be used for other than tightening the bolt on the piece which holds the sanding drum though. All in all it did a very good job on their nails.

This tool is too slow to do the entire nail job. Most dogs aren't that patient. Other problems that it causes are too much heat, and the rotating shaft snags hair very easily, which is a problem on long-haired breeds. It is best used to remove the sharp edge on the nail after you have used clippers on it.

I have a couple of dogs and have used a Dremel for decades to do all my dogs' nails. I was bummed when I saw that somebody 'invented' the PediPaws and is probably making a fortune! Coulda, woulda, shoulda... oh well.



In any case, a couple of years ago I bought this item: Dremel 1100-N/25 7.2-Volt Stylus Lithium-Ion Cordless Rotary Tool Kit with Docking Station since it was cordless. It is very compact and the shape makes it easy to use when doing the dog's nails. A big plus for me is the Lithium Ion batteries which hold a great charge and should last pretty much forever. It also has a variable speed instead of just a Hi-Lo setting. I know this is quite a bit more, but you can use this for just about anything instead of just pet nails. It is every bit as useful and powerful as my corded Dremels (yes that's plural - "He who dies with the most tools WINS").



All that being said, I also have a PediPaws which is far inferior to the power of the Dremel, but the nice thing is that the PediPaws has a housing that catches the majority of the toe nail grindings. I use it for touchups in the house when the weather does not allow me to do it outside. I will not use the Dremel in the house since it does kick up quite a bit of (let's call it) dust. I only use the Dremel outside and don't worry about the dust. My dogs are around 70 pounds, so if you have a small dog, this might not be a problem for you.



One thing I always do is pre-trim the nails with a standard pet nail clipper to get started and then finish up with the Dremel. goes much quicker and saves a lot of grinding. I don't try to get them too close with the clipper, and save the final pedicure for the Dremel. The dog will let you know when you're getting too close and if you do it every couple of weeks, you'll be surprised how short their nails can be maintained since the quick will actually recede with regular trimming. And, the pre-trim saves the drums from wearing out so quickly.



One last thing, Dremel sells various sizes of drums. I have found that the large size work better since they don't tend to drift in use and they also last a lot longer than the tiny ones.



And a last, last thing... DO NOT crank this up to high speed when doing the nails. You should never go above 4 or 5 since the high speed will heat up the nails and you don't want to torture your dog any more than you must. Just doing the nails is torture enough.

It's weak, has low RPMs and BURNS through batteries.

FOUR at a time no less.

WELL worth the money to get a real Dremel tool, it's much

This tool is a battery powered Dremel tool with a sanding drum about the diameter of a pencil. It does a much better job than the most expensive clippers we have bought. The dog tolerates this better than the clippers - she doesn't like the smell of the nail (claw) dust but hates the evil clippers that bite her from time to time. I don't know if it is the switch or the battery holder contacts, but sometimes this tool has a tough time getting up to and holding its speed. Freedom from a cord is nice, but if you already own a variable speed Dremel tool that you can really slow down (2000 rpm) with quarter- or half-inch sanding drum, you can do as well.

The Dremel dos a poor job at grinding down nails. It is hard to control and does not do much grinding. I previously had a Peticure and it worked very well until a bearing in the motor failed. I tried the cheaper Dremel but it barely takes off any nail at all. The Peticure's nail protection cover seemed to be a little bit of a hassle, but it actually worked very well - it helped position the sanding drum and let me apply more pressure to ramove more nail faster. I think I will order a corded Peticure and be done with it.

I originally purchased a "Pedi - Paws", which is very similar to the Dremel pet tool. Bottom Line, I found the Pedi - Pawa useless as our cat was scared of the noise. Then came the Dremel, claimed by marketing to have a "soothing" sound to animals. Not the case. I have both the Dremel and Pedi Paws in front of me, and the Dremel is louder. Unless your pet is deaf or enjoy's outings with you on July 4th, I'd recommend old fashion files or nail clippers.

As a side note, 4 AAA batteries are not included. The 5 accessories are just sanding disks.

I own a Dremel and it is a wonderful tool for what is originally designed, but would not recommend any of these products for a cat. After I wrote this review, I see someone had prior left almost the same rating using the same title. I concur with everything stated in that review.
