I bought this tool mainly for drilling into rock up in the mountains to place anchor bolts for climbing. Let me tell you, this thing blasts through rock as well as concrete. It is actually as fast or faster than my corded rotary hammer I use. This thing is a fun little toy as well (I find myself going around and finding stuff to drill)

Bottom line: if you need to get some heavy duty drilling done, this is a great tool to have by your side

I drill alot of concrete around pools installing automatic pool covers. I can tell you this drill has plenty of power. In fact I don't use it when drilling smaller 1/4 holes as the 36 volt hammer drill is plenty for that. It really shines drilling 1/2" holes in pool decks. Fast and light. I love the 36 volt batteries. They hold there charge for weeks. I was using dewalt 18volt drills which were fine but the batteries would drain so fast and would be dead if I did not keep the charged until I needed them. I just wish they would make a right angle 36 volt drill and a portable fan to keep me cool!

My review is actually for the D-handle model of the otherwise identical tool.

This Makita LXT 18v Li-on D-handle rotary hammer has 1.9 joules (or 1.4 ft*lb) of impact energy at up to 4000 blows per minute. By comparison, Makita's corded version has 2.7 joules (or 2.0 ft*lb) of impact energy at up to 4500 blows per minute, making the cordless version about 70% as powerful as the corded version, which isn't bad. I can't complain because the trade-off for portability is power and speed.

I bought this cordless rotary hammer specifically to drill 5/8" holes in concrete to set anchor bolts for my deck's footings. I can drill each 5/8" hole up to 6" deep in a minute or two, but it drains the battery at a fairly quick clip. My rough recollection is that it can only drill at most 2 of the 6"-deep, 5/8" diameter holes before the battery needs recharging. Based on my experience with the 5/8" holes, I have no doubt it is capable of drilling up to 7/8" holes.

I also used a 1" chisel bit on it and it worked really fast to chip concrete to set the footings. All in all, I am happy with this purchase despite the short battery life.

Regular Dremel EZ545 for us last for well over 20 glass pieces.

These wheels don't even last for one piece.

In this case you certainly get what you pay for.

It might be a steal if you work with softer materials ... it just doesn't work for harder materials.

this work just fine, cuts trough everything I've tried, hard rocks, metal, wood,etc..

use them with a little water so they don't run out to fast, it makes cutting easier.

only thing bad is that the diameter is to small, some things just can't be cut whit this because of that.

The screw will not tighten onto the mandrill sufficiently to lock the cutting wheel in place; I have used other diamond cutting wheels (purchased from American Science & Surplus, who have not paid me for that bit of shilling) and never had a bit of trouble. Fie on me for going for a slightly lower price.

I tested a couple of them with a proxxon micromot 50/E and they cut wood fine, I use them for fine detail of my wood carvings. One of them arrived with a little bent tip and other arrived with a round tip just a couple of microns without grit, but it doesn't matter for what i use them. They cut better that the Dremel diamond bits that I purchased one year ago.

If you are going to use them on glass try to use water or some sort of coolant to provide long lasting time for them. They are cheaper I will buy another set... and I did it, this time the second set arrived with the golden coat, but quality is the same. I have done beautiful carvings with this set.

It's really great set of burs, I was hesitated at first because of the low price for a whole set but then decided to give it a try and that's because I'm still practicing and learning.

I gave it a try and the result was even better than I thought it would! I've never achieved a smooth surface from the first time but with these burs I did.

Regarding the kit it self, just one burr that wasn't good, the tip was bent a little bit and I didn't need it anyway :D

It's a great deal for newbies, go for it!

about to tile the floor in one of my bedrooms. This tool with the correct blade did not cut any of the tile, as for the

18 volt battery..... it's way too top heavy.

A 12 or a 14 volt would have been a better choice. Save your money don't buy it!!!!!!

"Amazing power for a cordless." 2010-04-15

After foolishly trying to drill 3/4" holes in concrete with the LXT Hammer Driver/Drill, I ended up with a 1" deep mess.

I got the BHR240 and the difference is amazing. With very little effort I had two 5" deep 3/4" dia holes in less time than it took to drill the 1" deep mess from earlier. The holes are amazingly smooth and the drill is easy to contol. I'm pretty sure my 7 year old could do it. As others mentioned, the power to do this to concrete has to come from somewhere. My 4 year old 18v LXT batteries start to fade after two holes (3/4" x 10" total). So, if you were doing this all day you would need 2 chargers and 3-4 batteries. Alternatively, I believe Bosch has a 36v model. Me, I am already invested in LXT tools and have been happy with every one, including this one.

I've been using a Bosch Bulldog for about 7 years. I got the Makita BHR240 as a mail in rebate from Makita for buying their LXT702 kit from Amazon. It's almost every bit as powerful as the corded Bulldog, and works great for smaller size holes. Combine this tool with a Makita impact driver, and you've got an ideal cordless solution to driving Tapcon fasteners into concrete and masonry. The part of the tool that accepts the battery is mounted on rubber to insulate the battery from vibration, and feels a little bit too loose. The battery still can vibrate against the tool itself. I think Makita could have put a little more work into their battery mount on this tool to better isolate the vibration. Otherwise, i'm very happy with my free tool!

I have used this rotary hammer drill for up to 3/4" holes in concrete and tile and it is nothing short of awesome. I also own the Bosch Bulldog, which is the industry standard in small rotary hammer drills, and this cordless Makita performs right up there with it, making short work of whatever I put it up against. While the Bosch is a great hammer drill as well, the portability of the 18 volt Li-Ion Makita really makes this drill shine, highly recommended for anyone who requires a portable rotary hammer with enough power to do the job.

I bought this for a large model boat project. It had some hard use and the large cutting discs are very useful. Battery life is excellent. The speed controller switch however has malfunctioned and comes on and off on it's own which is neither desirable nor safe. The tool currently in the chuck has also jammed shut and cannot be undone! I have just ordered another one at great expense as could not find Amazon return policy.

This is not a review of the product - just answering the question about model numbers.

I just spoke to Dremel. All the 8000-0X models contain the same tool, the same battery and the same charger. The difference is in the accessories and the carrying case:

8000-01 (if you can find one) came with 60 accessories.

8000-02 came with 40 accessories

8000-03 is identical to 8000-02, but the carrying case is smaller, allowing them to fit more product on the store shelves.

8000-05 is "an industrial product available only through industrial channels." When I said that it is available on Amazon.com, the rep found that odd, said that she (being a retail rep) didnt know what accessories were inluded, but said that the tool is the same but the kit includes tools more appropriate to an industrial user.

Sooooo... there you have it!

I've used mine for about a year now. Mine never said anything about being "Industrial" and I paid about $33 for mine but this 10.8 ION battery version has plenty power and endurance. I would suggest strongly in getting cut offs and grinders as it comes with the usual sanding and buffing disc and you will find cutting and grinding jobs will come up often around the house. A great tool for making things fit....

I was told that there is no "Industrial" version of the 10.8 Volt Rotary Tool and that they were going to investigate the situation. I have no information on the status of said investigation.
